The Colour Game

Eligibility: 18-65 year old, same-sex twins.

Researchers at the University of NSW and Wellesley College are conducting a project about how you perceive and experience colour. The study aims to determine whether the preference for colours, colour combinations, and the decision-making strategies used to reveal these preferences, are determined by genes, experience, or a combination of both.

As far as seeing is concerned, colour might seem like just a fun extra, but our strong reactions to it hint at something deeper. People spend time and money choosing colours for clothes, homes, and devices. Yet there is a lack of scientific data to help us understand why we like what we like.

By studying colour choices in twins, this project will help uncover how much of our personal taste is learned and how much we’re born with.

What is involved?

The project involves you taking part in some tasks online, at your own pace. You will play a colour game that involves making a simple digital “painting” (no art training required), do a short colour vision test, rate colour combinations as attractive or unattractive, and complete a short questionnaire. Participation should take approximately 30 minutes.

If you and your twin participate in this study, you will automatically enter to win a gift card of $250, one for you and your twin (5 twin pairs will win). You also have the option to receive feedback on how your digital creations compare to others, at the end of the study.

Who is eligible?

Same-sex twin pairs, aged 18-65 years old are eligible.

Participants are required to have normal or corrected to normal vision (i.e. if you normally wear contacts or glasses, you should wear these while participating in the study).
