Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with a two-fold increased risk of dementia. The reasons for this are unclear and require investigation. This study aims to examine glucose use in the brain and how this may contribute to the risk of dementia.

The researchers would like to compare twins with and without diabetes to understand if there are any differences in brain structure and function.

What is involved?

An MRI, a cognition test, a questionnaire, physical measurements, 24hr blood pressure measurement and a PET scan.

Who is eligible?

Twin pairs aged 50yrs plus who are living in Melbourne or are able to travel to Melbourne for testing over a period of 2 days. The researchers will cover the costs of travel and accommodation for interstate participants.
